Poison Arrows are one of the most fatal factors that need to be avoided. Some basic and generic laws that you can adopt inside and outside your house are:

  • The front door should be easily accessible from the road but should not be in a straight line with it. Chi enters mainly through the front door.

  • Bright lights just inside and outside the door are excellent at inviting good Chi into the house, and should be left on when it's dark. Bright light indicates Yang, the one that is active and considered conducive for living beings. In a similar vein, avoid badly lit areas or houses very close to the cemetery as this constitutes too much of Yin conducive for the dead and spirits. Same applies to houses near hospitals. It is preferable to avoid such houses too.

  • Your entrance hall / living room should be well lit, uncluttered and sparsely furnished so that the Chi can curve and wander through in a meandering fashion.

  • Once in your living room the Chi should meander around slowly, aided by your furniture placement. It is best if chairs and sofas are positioned around the edge of the room - make sure none of them have their backs to the door. Try not to make the TV the focus of attention and keep the center of the room empty.

  • Sift through all your possessions, think about what each one means to you and banish all unnecessary clutter so you clear a path through your home for the uninterrupted flow of Chi.

  • Avoid houses, which are on very low lying areas. The Chi accumulated there has strong chances of getting stagnated.

  • From a psychology point of view, you may want to choose your pictures carefully - avoid hunting scenes, lonely windswept moors with solitary figures or sad connotations.

  • Your front door should not have a view of the back door (through your hallway) or the Chi will rush straight through your home and be wasted. In other words, all the points stress on bright, non-messy and organized entrances as well as the living area. Isn't this more of common sense and something that we always desire to?

I have deliberately not discussed about the remedial measures as this could be potentially dangerous if not implemented without a proper audit. It is appropriate that recommendations are given after complete Feng Shui audit of the site in question.

Having said that, lets now move to the deadly poison arrows and other factors, which are to be definitely avoided. Check every window in every room to see if any 'poison arrows' are 'looking in'. These arrows, bring in negative energy and could be in any one of the following forms:

  • Solitary lamp-post, transmission tower, tall tree outside the main door or in line with the vision of the front door of the house.

  • Neighboring rooftop sharply pointing towards your house.

  • Sharp corner of a building pointing at your house.

  • Excessive sharp corners of furniture inside the house.

  • Road coming straight at your main door.

  • Road coming straight at your door and then suddenly turning away towards right or left.

  • Sitting or sleeping under a beam.

  • Pointed plants, dry leaves, dead trees

Other factors, which contribute to aggravating negative Chi, are as below and equally needs to be avoided:

  • Staircase leading directly into a house

  • House at the junction of roads

  • Confusion of more than two doors in a passage.

  • Houses with missing corners, which are more than 1/3rd of the total area.

  • Pool in the center of the house.

These were the general guidelines that one would adopt on a surface level while deciding on a property.
